Planned Route and Downloadable Documents

This is an out and back route (“sit there, twist that”) simple, yet very challenging.
From the start you will travel North on Blue Lakes Blvd North to I84.
You will turn East (into the sunrise) on I84 toward Pocatello.
Just after the Chubbuck exit (Pocatello area), I84 merges into I15.
You will turn North onto I15 and continue North to Great Falls, Montana.
You will then reverse your route and return to the Mr. Gas in Twin Falls by the same route with the same mandatory stops.

Attention Riders: You should download the Witness Forms and Gas Log and complete before arriving at the site.

The Site Coordinator has approved the directions provided below.
These directions are based upon the recommendation of Microsoft Streets and Trips 2004 - Quickest Route.
There may be alternate routes to each mandatory stop.
In fact, the Garmin Mapsource file that is provided below may be different from the described route.
However, we do recommend that you follow the suggested route.

Click here for Route MAP and Directions (PDF)

Warning: Stops #2 & 4 near Pocatello have been relocated to 4444 Yellowstone, not 5059 Yellowstone as shown.

Departing Twin Falls SS1000:

  • The Riders will be released once their witness form is completed. Riders will be released a couple at a time. We do not want riders riding in a pack for safety reasons. Our goal is to get all riders out by 6:00 am and release the witnesses by that time.
  • If you arrive at the staging area after 6:00 am, you will not be counted as part of the ride.
  • Have your witness form filled out and your odometer reading recorded. The witness should simply have to fill in the time, their personal information, and sign the form. Do your final T-CLOCK inspection before getting the witness signature.
  • When you are ready to go, advise one of the witnesses. They will validate your odometer reading and license plate number; and add the time and their personal information to the witness form.
  • When you are released from the staging area, you are expected to go directly to the get your initial gas receipt.
  • Plan accordingly. Eat breakfast before staging.
  • Gas up and get a receipt at Mr. Gas
    * * * THE GAS RECEIPT'S COMPUTER TIME STAMP WILL BE YOUR OFFICIAL STARTING TIME * * *
  • You are off on the Saddle Sore 1000. Ride safe, don't push your limits, and most of all enjoy your ride.
  • Riders have up to, but no more than, 24 hours to complete the SS1000 ride using the approved route and obtain an ending computer printed gas receipt with a date and time stamp at the starting/ending location.

    Details of Start and Finish:
Click here for Twin Falls Start/End

You MUST pick up receipts at the following stops in order to validate the corners of the approved route:
Some IBA riders get two receipts at Start, Finish and each Mandatory Stop. It is a lot easier to get both a gas receipt and a receipt for snack/water at important stops than to repeat a ride because a receipt went missing. Many IBA riders store their receipts in a waterproof, zip-sealed plastic bag.
Regardless of your need for gasoline, you must purchase some and furnish computerized receipts to validate these specific points on your ride.
These 5 receipts absolutely must be computerized.
    1. Mr. Gas, 911 Blue Lakes Blvd. North, Twin Falls, Idaho 83301 (validated).
    2. Chubbuck Shell Gas, 4444 Yellowstone, Chubbuck, ID 83202 Tel: 208-237-5971 at I86 Exit 61, North to Jackson’s, Shell Gasoline (validated).
This was listed as 5059 Yellowstone until updated on 4-27-05.
    3. Great Falls Flying J, 1715 Vaughn Road, Great Falls, MT 59404, Tel:406-727-7945 at I15 Exit 280 GPS -111.343563 47.513064 (validated).
    5. Mr. Gas, 911 Blue Lakes Blvd. North, Twin Falls, Idaho 83301 (validated).

In the event one of these locations is closed, out of business, burned down, etc., you must get your computerized receipts from the nearest possible provider. We have done everything we can to validate the availability of these locations, but things can happen.

You must also keep all other gas receipts for route verification. Ideally these are computerized receipts that contain the accurate location, date and time of your stop. You should also note your time and your mileage on the receipt with a ballpoint pen. An explanation will be necessary for illegible, missing or non-computerized receipts. It is acceptable to note corrected information on receipts and have them witnessed by the attendant. The purpose here is to validate your ride not deny it. Other computerized receipts that contain the same information are acceptable (food, atm, etc). You must also document rest stops, but receipts are not necessary for rest stops.

Please note, there are some pretty empty stretches of highway on this route. With proper gasoline management you should be fine. The key words are gasoline management. DO NOT PASS UP FUEL UNLESS YOU ARE CERTAIN YOU CAN MAKE IT TO NEXT AVAILABILITY. Better to put in a quarter tank than to push your bike 50 miles. That being said, it is also not safe to carry gasoline anywhere but in your motorcycle gas tank.

There are portions of this route that can be infested with various sorts of critters. Please be careful. This route can also be subjected to rain, snow, sleet, hail, wind, earthquakes and other acts of nature. Proper riding gear will go a long way toward conquering these sorts of challenges.

Your ride will not be certified (a) if you receive a moving violation, (b) if your motorcycle appears unsafe, (c) if you are not wearing a helmet during the entire ride or (d) if you evidence a bad attitude. We will not inspect your motorcycle. But if we become aware of an unsafe condition (e.g. gas leaking on the manifold) we will call it to your attention and possibly disqualify your ride. We are not and don’t pretend to be mechanics or safety inspectors. We only care about you completing a safe and enjoyable ride.

You must have a motorcycle endorsement on your license and a current proof of insurance card. Adequate life and health insurance are also important. In view of the long and desolate stretches of scenic slab and breathtaking vistas, one may wish to have a life-flight plan as well if needed.

The route is 1,040.16 miles. The Site Coordinators have personally made this little jaunt a time or two, and it’s awesome.
A better SS1000 in America is hard to find. Enjoy!

Returning from the Twin Falls SS1000:

  • Once you return from your ride, you are required to obtain a gas receipt at the Mr. Gas in Twin Falls.
    * * * THE GAS RECEIPT'S COMPUTER TIME STAMP WILL BE YOUR OFFICIAL ENDING TIME * * *
  • You can stop the panic. Your official time has been recorded on your receipt.
  • Waiting until our witnesses are available will not affect the certification of your ride.
  • Site Coordinators will be manning the check-in from 9:00 pm June 11th until 6:00 am June 12th.
  • If you arrive at the check-in table after 6:00 am on June 12th, you will not be counted as part of the ride.
  • You must turn in your completed documentation (Witness forms, Stop Log, and Gas Receipts) to the Site Coordinator at the completion of your ride. If you do not turn in your documentation, you will not be counted as part of the ride.
  • Congratulations on a great ride!

    2. What are the rider's responsibilities?

Riders will be required to acknowledge their responsibilities during the registration process. Each rider is responsible for their own ride. The MTF is helping with the logistics by planning a route and arranging for witnesses; however, the rider is responsible for the ride. Safety is of primary importance.

      • Participant agrees to keep and maintain his motorcycle in a good and safe condition, in full compliance with all rules and laws governing such vehicles. Specifically, said motorcycle shall be in full compliance with any and all safety inspections and certifications required by the State of registration of said motorcycle and shall be safe to operate on the public ways and under the conditions to be encountered in the Event.
      • Participant will at all times while riding his motorcycle wear and employ all such safety clothing and gear including, but not limited to, a DOT approved helmet, as is reasonable, customary and prudent for use by motorcyclists under the circumstances of the Event. A DOT approved helmet shall be worn at all times while Participant is riding in the Event whether or not the use of such a helmet is required in the jurisdiction in which the Participant is riding.
      • Participant shall be licensed to operate a motorcycle in his State of residence and authorized to legally operate a motorcycle in the State or States, Country or Countries where the Event may be held. Participant's motorcycle shall be properly registered and licensed.
      • Participant shall have and maintain in full force and effect liability insurance and such other insurance as may be required for the operation of a motorcycle in the State or States, Country or Countries where the Event may be held.
      • Participant shall comply with any and federal and State laws including, such as but not limited to, all safety rules, traffic laws and rules of the road.
      • Should Participant be given a map or route information as part of the Event, Participant shall use such map or route information at his own discretion and will not rely upon said map or route information as a representation that it is safe or prudent to follow such map or route information. Such decisions shall be and remain in the sole discretion of Participant.
      • Each Participant is responsible for his own ride. The MTF helps with the logistics by planning a route and arranging for witnesses, however, the Participant is responsible for the ride. Safety is of primary importance.
      • The Participant is responsible for terminating his participation in the Event if he feels that continuing would put himself or others in jeopardy.
      • The Participant is responsible for his personal condition. The MTF does not condone nor will it tolerate riding under the influence of alcohol, illicit drugs and even some prescription drugs.
      • The rider is responsible for reviewing the Motorcycle Safety Foundation "You and Your Motorcycle: Riding Tips" booklet
      • The rider is responsible for reviewing the Motorcycle Safety Foundation "Motorcycle Operator Manual" booklet

If the MTF discovers that a rider has violated their responsibilities, even if it is after the ride is certified, the MTF will notify the IBA and the certification will be revoked.

    3. The rider is responsible for doing TCLOCK!

T-CLOCK is a mnemonic developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation for assisting you in doing a comprehensive pre-ride (or a pre-purchase) inspection of a motorcycle. It is easily memorized and very useful. The individual letters stand for the specific areas to check:

    4. Tires and wheels
      Controls
      Lights and electrical
      Oil and fluids
      Chassis
      Kickstand
