Safety
In addition to requiring the use of a DOT approved helmet on all MTF rides, the MTF Flower Sniffin’ Committee strongly encourages the use of Motorcycle specific protective clothing and footwear while participating in any Flower Sniffin' event. All-the-gear-All-the-time (ATGATT) reduces the severity of injuries in an accident and we want every participant in our events to be as safe as possible.

Also the MTF Flower Sniffin' Committee strongly encourages each participant in our events to self assess their riding style, interests, need for breaks and riding skill level and to keep that assessment in mind when choosing a riding partner or small group (2-4 riders) to ride with at our events. Sharing the road with someone of similar interests and riding style not only makes the ride more enjoyable for you, but safer for everyone.

Routes

Route

Route Description

Special thanks to Bob Cust for organizing and supplying these routes for us!

Bob used the following conditions when he created the routes:
  1. All routes start on July 27, 2020 at 07:00.
  2. If the route includes stops at any locations he used a one hour layover.  For some stops this will not be enough.
  3. All routes were created using Garmin Basecamp's City Navigator North America NT 2020.3 mapset. It is recommended that everyone imports the routes into Basecamp with the latest maps and recalculate to ensure the change in maps doesn’t make unwanted changes in the route.
Bad Lands It is recommended that the Bad Lands and Wall Drug be included in your route to or from Keystone.  If you do this route from Keystone it includes stops at:

  1. Museum of Natural History in Scenic SD.  It’s a small private museum and doesn’t seem to have a website.
  2. Badlands National Park Visitors Center:  https://www.nps.gov/badl/index.htm. The park entrance fee is $25 for motorcycles and $30 dollars for cars. This is good for 7 days so save the tickets. The annual senior/military card covers this.
  3. Wall Drug:   http://www.walldrug.com/
  4. South Dakota Air & Space Museum:  https://www.sdairandspacemuseum.com/. The museum is free but the bus tour which goes onto the base costs $10.

The entire route is approximately 204 miles, with 3 hours 49 minutes riding and 4 hours for stops, bringing the total to 7 hours 49 minutes.
Custer National Forest Loop The entire route is approximately 309 miles, with 5 hours 13 minutes riding but no scheduled stops, bringing the total to 5 hours 13 minutes.
Custer State Park/Needles HWY/Iron MTN This could be combined with the next route to make a full day. Custer State Park has a $20 fee good for one week so save the ticket.

The entire route is approximately 56 miles, with 2 hours 39 minutes riding but no scheduled stops, bringing the total to 2 hours 39 minutes.
Deadwood/Sturgis There are quite a few sights to see in both towns that are not on the route. You should plan on several hours in Deadwood.  POIs are included for the following:

The entire route is approximately 130 miles, with 5 hours 9 minutes riding and 2 hours for stops, bringing the total to 7 hours 9 minutes.
Spearfish Canyon Nemo RD This route runs Spearfish Canyon roads in both directions.  There are several restaurants in Spearfish if you want to do a lunch stop there.  It also shows a stop at Spearfish Canyon Lodge.  This is a good place to take a break or there is a restaurant there if you don’t eat in Spearfish.  Not on the route but there is a POI for DC Booth Historic Fish Hatchery in Spearfish:   https://dcboothfishhatchery.org/. No admission fee.
