2007 Western Mountain Ride, Flower Sniffin’ Ride July 13 – Leaving out of Lolo, Montana      -       By Claye Curtis (ClayC)

311 miles

I had talked to Barb Smith on the phone the night before and we decided to take a ride around the northern ID/western Montana the next day. The problem was that we couldn’t make up our minds which direction to head, so agreed to meet the next morning, look at the map, and make our decision. Several others joined us in that discussion, and our ride grew into a small group of eight. Now, this is a small group, but it is a group of riders that tend to ride solo. Speaking for myself, I'd prefer riding alone or with a close friend back in Virginia, but will share the road occasionally with someone for a few miles.

So here we go, the group loosely led by Brian Rossmann, who lives in Bozeman, had a route in mind that would take us through some great scenery.

Here’s Greg and Pat Blewett,
behind me as we ride down U.S. 93.

Here’s Barb Smith, riding in front of me.

Stopping for a potty break at the top
of Lolo Pass on U.S. 93.

Stopping at Big Hole National Battlefield to appease us stamp collectors in the group

We had a section of rough road under construction on S.R. 43 after we left Wisdom, MT on the way to Anaconda. Not bad though. The worse part was the washboard surface making us go ba, bumpity, bumpity.

More back road, put paved,
as we headed north on Big Hole Road
(S.R. 274) toward Anaconda.

We left Anaconda headed west
and north on S.R. 1,
otherwise known as
the Pintler Scenic Loop.

This is a great group of people
who won't hesitate to ride
1,000 miles to meet friends
for a ride and dinner:
Group dinner at Jaker’s in Missoula.
