Official Obituary

William Michael "Mike" Schwartz

William Michael “Mike” Schwartz, of Teague, passed away May 29, 2023 in Mexia, Texas at the age of 76.

Mike was born July 29, 1946, in Corsicana, Texas.  His parents, Pauline Faughn Schwartz and Albert Hancock Schwartz preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Darla; his brother-in-law, Wayne Hensley; and his chosen son, Sam Wright.  He is also survived by nieces and nephews of his brother-in-law and many cousins on both the maternal and paternal sides of his family.

Mike joined the Navy in 1964, was released from active duty in 1967, then transferred to Naval Reserve until his release in 1970.  While serving his country, he learned a skill that resulted in his becoming an electrician. He moved to Arlington and started his business as a commercial electrical contractor.  MEC, Inc. was started in 1974 and continued until he retired in 2001.

He was as respected in business as he was loved in friendship.

He was a member of IEC, Independent Electrical Contractors, all the time he was in business. He became president of the local chapter and the state.  He was a board member for life.

Mike's willingness to help anyone without the expectation of recognition or reward gained him respect from all he encountered.  He will be remembered not only for his loyalty to friends and his love of family but also for the gleam in his blue eyes, his smile, and his joyous laugh.

His retirement years brought him and his wife to Teague, Texas, from Arlington, Texas.  His love of the land, of nurturing the land, of watching calves grow and thrive under the mama cow's care made retirement a time of pleasure.

At the same time, retirement allowed him to travel, for he loved to travel on his motorcycle.  His pleasure of riding with friends, the challenges presented by the Iron Butt Association, and the patriotic endeavors of participation in the Tour of Honor all created memories he cherished and loved to share.

A few select comments from Mike's MTF Friends:

I have met Mike several times over the years. The first time I met him my Harley had broke down in Terlingua Texas. He said he wasn't going to ride that day and go ahead and take his Honda and go to Midland and get my parts. That would have be a 10 hour trip. I turned him down but I have thought of this many times over the years him offering his bike to basically a stranger . But that was just the way he was. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

I went on many rides with him last seeing him in Branson! My most memorable ride was chasing him, Art Garvin and Randy Freyer in the 2010 RAT.

I hate hearing this, Mike was a great guy! I shared the road with him a few times, including during the first Ride Around Texas.
RIP Mike. Condolences and prayers for his family.
