It’s In Our Hands

Motorcycle accident reports come at us from a variety of media at a much higher rate than any of us want to see. Due to a 25 year history in motorcycle safety activities, I suspect I tend to dwell on these reports and their follow-on more than many of us. One of the things that I find revealing is the path that many of these stories/reports/anecdotes often follow.
Immediately following the crash, inevitability is often the message. “There was absolutely nothing I could do”, “the car turned left about 20’ in front of me”, “it flew off the truck directly into my path”, “there was absolutely no warning of the treacherous traction”, and etc, etc. I never probe these reports when they are fresh as, after the indignity of a crash, who wants some “know it all” querying and second-guessing. I do try to understand the full circumstances of the incident to the degree possible.

Getting to Know You
By Braulio Montesino (Havana ß)
Wheeldog: (hwel · dog) n. [dog sledding terminology] Usually a big, strong dog placed directly in front of the sled. Their job is to turn the sled, and to keep it from hitting trees or other obstacles. They also can help get the sled broken loose if it is stuck or bogged down.
Not a bad nickname for our own Roger Bliss. Roger is a Charter Member of the MTF and we can always count on him to break us loose when we get stuck or bogged down. You don’t have to look far to see Roger’s trademark “Alaska Rocks” sigpic on our forum. Just pick out any discussion and you’re likely to run across one or more of Roger’s helpful and friendly posts.

The Ice Man
By James Hickey (pons12)
Sometimes the best-laid plans are….. muddled. My plan was to do a Saddle Sore 1000 to Tombstone Arizona from Tyler, Texas. Once I got there I would meet, mingle and celebrate with fellow MTF members.
Before I left my wife had warned me about bad weather moving into Texas and of course I blew it off because I had plans. I left Tyler Friday January 12th at 01:30 and headed for Tombstone straight across Texas, New Mexico and Arizona on I-20/ I-10. The trip to Tombstone was fairly uneventful. On the way I met a guy from Houston riding a new Triumph Tiger who was on his way to Baja. We rode together from Van Horn to El Paso where we fueled our bikes and went our separate ways.

A Note from the MTF Board

Evolution of a Forum
I would like to share some numbers with you. Not just the numbers but what makes those numbers so amazing and how they came about. The MTF was created in July of 2001 by a man with a vision. I’m sincerely hoping what we have become is well on the way to meeting that vision and that ultimately we get there. I think we are on the right path.
